Wild Mushroom Expo

The Wild Mushroom Expo is an annual event held in Alberta presented by the Alberta Mycological Society.
Mushrooms from across the province are gathered to be displayed on moss beds, cooked as samples by a local chef, and used as inspiration for our local creatives to sculpt, paint, and shape for our art contest! There are displays for medicinal, edible, and poisonous fungi, as well as informative displays for those interested in growing their own fungi! Educational presentations occurred throughout the day, as well as guided mushroom walks for those interested in seeing what one of our forays is like!

Lemon Ginger Joy with Turmeric & Black Pepper

Love this  Lemon,  ginger, turmeric and black pepper drink from  Lemon Ginger Joy.

Turmeric is an herb in the ginger family and has been widely used for centuries throughout India and Asia. Turmeric’s medicinal benefits are associated with its active ingredient, curcumin which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

The addition of black pepper greatly enhances turmeric’s benefits.

Ginger has also been used for centuries for colds, flu, indigestion, nausea, arthritis, and headaches.

Lemons are one of the world’s oldest cultivated fruit plants. Lemon is an anti-inflammatory, aids in digestion and boosts the immune system.

Lemon Ginger Joy  is a thin paste that easily stirs onto a drink. I use sparkling water and a couple of ounces of fruit juice. Honey would also make an excellent sweetener. It can also be made into a hot beverage.

Nine Sacred Herbs of the Anglo-Saxons

The Lacnunga (from læc, healing; the title can be translated as “Remedies”) is an Anglo-Saxon document that was written around 1000 AD. The document is housed in the British Museum.

Lacnunga

The Lacnunga contains more than 200 treatments using medicinal plants and other materials including prayers. One of the best known of these is the “Nine Herbs Prayer.”

Medical practitioners of the time knew that effective health care required meeting the patient’s physical, psychological and emotional needs.

The herbs mentioned in the charm are nine sacred herbs which were thought to have been given to humans by Woden, the God of healing and were made into a sterile (boiled) salve to treat geblæd, an infection or inflammation of the skin.

The nine sacred herbs are:

  1. Mugwort (Artemisisa vulgaris)
  2. Plantain (Plantago major)
  3. Lamb’s cress (Nasturtium officinalis)
  4. Betony (Stachys betonica)
  5. Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
  6. Stinging nettle (Utricia dioca)
  7. Crab apple (Pyrus malus)
  8. Chervil (Anthriscus)
  9. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
